Description

A used WW1 British BEF Coldstream Guards Officers Wilkinson Sword Lt George Stubley.
This sword belonged to 1896-1928.
Overall this sword is in excellent condition with an even patina
minor pitting
across the blade.
The hilt has heavy patina spread all over.
On the blade there is excellent etching with George Stubley's name and the Coldstream Guards Battle honours up until the Boer War. Also etched into the blade is King George Vs crown and the Coldstream Guards badge.
The hand guard/hilt has the Cold Stream Guards Badge on it.
Blade length is approx 32.5 inches long.
Unfortunately
the scabbard throat screw is missing so the throat is loose and needs to be re-secured. Stubley's WW1 service record survived and is held by the National Archives. Stubley joined the Royal Military College (Sandhurst) in May 1915 and was made a 2/Lt in the Coldstream Guards in October of 1915. By December he was promoted to
Lieutenant
and then sent to France in March 1916 where he served until being wounded at the Somme in August that year. Stubley would spend
approximately
2 years in England before
returning
to France in August of 1918, where he was once again wounded in September while serving with the 2nd Battalion Coldstream Guards. In June 1919 Stubley resigned his
commission. Stubley's story does not end with his retirement as the research provided tells a story of him being convicted of Manslaughter in 1921 after hitting and killing a decorated Police officer with his motorcycle, which adds an interesting story onto his life.
Stubley died in 1928. Comes complete with additional research.
