Description
Up for sale is a vintage Mine Safety Appliances (MSA) Comfo Cap. This I believe is called the tiger strip version because of how the fiberglass cloth and blackish resin create a striped look. This helmet is in an antique used condition. The helmet includes an original battery operated Koehler Wheat Lamp Model W with chest/back mounted battery pack. This is an original sealed battery and is very old will need to be replaced. The light does not work as is, but filaments look intact on bulbs. Possibly it just needs a new battery. There are a couple small areas that look like cracks but I do not believe they are cracks but imperfections in the original fiberglass/cloth work. There are multiple holes that someone drilled/cut for air vents (6 total) and some small holes maybe 7 or 8 that might have been used to mount accessories on the brim and rear of the helmet. 2 of the holes have a string that someone looped through them to use as a hanger I think. A couple small chips on the brim as well. It will still display nice however. I can't say if this is the original lining. It has a sweatband lining but no suspension. The liner size is 6-7/8 G, which is pretty small maybe for a child or a smaller person. It doesn't come close to fitting my melon head. (I'm 6'2" and 275 pounds though)
The only markings that I can see on the helmet are MSA Comfo Cap (In Cursive Writing) on the front where the lamp attaches. I included a whole bunch of photos so you can inspect the helmet closely. The helmet is 10-5/8"" from end of brim to back of helmet. The oval dimensions where the head fits, are 8-1/2" long and 7-3/8" wide The brim is just under 5.5" wide. The height of helmet is about 4.75" tall when sitting flat on table to very top rib/convex groove. The helmet w/ liner weighs 9.7 ounces.
The Koehler lamp is also in an antique used condition. There are scuffs, scrapes and dents to aluminum top on battery. There is one of the four screws missing to hold aluminum battery top in place. The electrical cable has some cracking, but other than that one area still pretty good. The cable is roughly 43" long. That bad section could be repaired then some heat shrink added to seal the cable back up. I could do that, but wanted to keep it original for the collector who buys it. Like I said this battery is no good and will need to get replaced if you want to try to make it work. You're buying it for display in the as-is condition unless you plan on restoring it.
This is a great restoration project. I'd say remove the liner, polish the helmet, and reinstall the liner. These appear to be highly sought after and have been yielding a high price. The starting price reflects the condition and the fact that it comes with the Koehler Wheat Lamp.
